Why we built it: When you search for auto body shops in Rochester after an accident, the first page is typically a mix of paid ads, Google Map Pack listings optimized for CTR, and low-effort directory sites that scraped Yelp three years ago. None of them answer the questions drivers actually have: Who has the fastest turnaround? Which shops handle insurance claims directly? Who does I-CAR certified frame work? Who has paint-matching expertise for metallic finishes? Auto body is also a category where the search results skew toward insurer steering — Direct Repair Program (DRP) listings that reflect a negotiated relationship with a carrier, not independently verified customer satisfaction. This directory tries to answer the real questions from public data — no PR pitches, no paid placements, and no weight given to DRP status.

How the Roc Score works: Every auto body shop in this directory is scored on a 0–100 composite called the Roc Score. The formula weights seven data signals: Google star rating (30% of the score), Google review count (20%), Yelp star rating (10%), Yelp review count (10%), BBB accreditation status (5%), review recency — how recently the shop got its most recent review (10%), and service area overlap with the suburbs where Rochester drivers are concentrated (15%). Service area overlap carries more weight here than it would in most local-service categories, because a collision often leaves a car undrivable more than a few miles — the “best” shop by review volume is a worse real-world answer than a strong shop that actually covers Webster, Irondequoit, Henrietta, or wherever the accident happened. Review recency matters for a related reason: a shop's ADAS calibration equipment and I-CAR training have to keep pace with a vehicle fleet that adds more cameras and sensors every model year, and reviews from the last 90 days are a better read on current capability than a 4.8-star average built up before that equipment existed. Review counts are log-normalized so a shop with 500 reviews doesn't score 100× a shop with 5 reviews — the algorithm rewards established operators without punishing newer ones that haven't yet built a large review base. Shops are re-ranked weekly as ratings change.

What the Roc Score doesn't measure: Credentials like I-CAR Gold Class certification, OEM-specific structural repair training, and ASE certification are real and matter — but they aren't part of this formula. We can't independently re-verify a shop's certification status on our weekly refresh cycle the way we can pull a fresh star rating from an API, and a directory that silently trusted a shop's self-reported credentials would be exactly the kind of unverifiable claim we're trying to route around. When a business profile mentions a certification, check it yourself at i-car.com/find-a-shop before you rely on it — it takes about thirty seconds.

What we are not:We are not a lead generation service. We are not a referral network. We do not take commission from shops when a driver calls them. We do not offer “featured placement” or “priority listing” packages, and — worth repeating because it's specific to this industry — we do not weight whether a shop sits on any insurer's Direct Repair Program list. If a shop ranks #1 on this site, it's because the public review data across Google, Yelp, and the BBB says it deserves to. If a shop ranks #7, same reason. No amount of money changes the algorithm, and no carrier relationship changes it either — the Roc Score formula is published on our methodology page and can be audited by anyone.

Editorial standards

• Public data only — we never republish proprietary review text verbatim. Review snippets shown on business profiles are ≤120 characters with a direct link to the original source.
• Every business entry has at least one cited source (Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, or NY State business records).
• No fabricated certifications, fake testimonials, or invented founding dates — when a profile mentions I-CAR or OEM certification, we link to the verification source instead of asserting it ourselves.
• We don't generate AI “sample of their work” repair or paint photos tied to a specific shop — a fabricated before/after image next to a real business name is the kind of thing that gets a driver's expectations wrong at the worst possible time.
• If a business asks to be removed or updated, we respond within 48 hours — no questions asked.
• We disclose our algorithm publicly. If we change the formula, we note the version and date.
